Republic day just went by, can you imagine a time when it is republic day, every Indian filled with pride comes to witness the grand flag hoisting of our tricolour and a massive 22 second long earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the moment magnitude scale hits, with a death toll of twenty thousand and a hundred thousand injured. This was precisely the case in Gujarat in 2001,where the bhuj earthquake destroyed 3 hundred thousand buildings, and left 3.6 million homeless. It mainly effected Kutch, Bhuj, Anjar and Bhachau. It also destroyed around 40% of homes, eight schools, two hospitals and 4 km of road in Bhuj, and partly destroyed the city's historic Swaminarayan temple and historic forts as well. The Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage inspected more than 250 heritage buildings in Kutch and Saurashtra and found that about 40% of them are either collapsed or seriously damaged. Only 10% were undamaged.Total property damage was estimated at $7.5 billion. Four months after the earthquake the Gujarat government announced the Gujarat Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Policy. The policy proposed a different approach to urban and rural construction with the estimated cost of rebuilding to be US $1.77 billion. Internationally the World bank and Asian bank also funded this process. Australia, Canada, Belgium, China, Israel, Greece, Italy, Kuwait, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Syria, Taiwan, UK, the US, UAE, Viatnam and Saudi Arabia all offered help. Smritivan, a memorial park and museum dedicated to victims of the earthquake is being built on top of Bhujia Hill. 2 lakh trees, each dedicated to one victim, were planted in the garden and 108 small water reservoirs were created on the hill.
